OCTOECHOS LATINO
"Gregorian Chant and its Melodic Systems"
CDPN-380
SCHOLA ANTIQUA
Conductor: Juan Carlos Asensio Palacios
In Gregorian Chant it is the structure of scales or modes what determines
the sentiments and emotions that are aroused. The Latin Octoechos system is
the melodic classification of the whole repertoire, rooted in the 8th
century. The works of Gregorian Chant are contained in books called
'Tonaries', and are classified according to their tones or modes. 'Schola
Antiqua', a prestigious Spanish Chorale formed in 1984, displays a complete
panorama of Gregorian Plainchant, flawlessly performed, but charged with
emotion, authenticity and deep prayer.
