RUSSIANS IN BIH

by Andrey Jahlawsky

During the war of Bosnia, mercenaries and volunteers from different countries fought on the side of Serbs, Croatians and Muslims. The Russians fought for the Serbs (except for a few who did it for the Croats) in Bosnia and Krajina. There were three Russian units:

1) First Voluntary Unit [Russkiy dobrovol'tscheskiy otryad, RDO], was founded in Trebinja (Herzegovina) and fought against the Croats, probably using the black, yellow and white flag.

2) Second Voluntary Unit or Czarist Wolves (Tzarskie volki) that used also a tri-color flag, black, yellow and white. It was founded by monarchists in autumn 1992 in the area of Vyshegrad. After their dissolution their flag was deposited in the Holy Trinity Church of Belgrade.

3) Third Voluntary Unit, that used the same flag with the cirilic inscriptions RDO. It was part of the Novosarajevo Tchetnik Unit, brigade Sarajevo-Romanja. Their flag appears in "Soldier of Fortune" 1996 nr 6, and in "Komsomolskaya Pravda" (16/06/99).

GUATEMALA: REFERENDUM 16 MAY 1999.

DEPARTAMENT OF JALAPA

Communication from Mrs Eva Luz Valdéz Valdéz, secretary of the departmental government dated 1 October 1998.

The flag of Jalapa was created in 1973 with occasion of the celebration of the foundation of the department of Jalapa. It consists of the colors red, yellow, green and white, with coat-of-arms in the white part. White symbolizes purity, green, the vegetation and forests of the department; yellow the kindness and sincerity of its people; and red, the fondness and friendship that is offered to the visitor as well as the courage of the Remicheros that inhabited Jalapa.

The coat-of-arms of Jalapa was made by Francisco Cabrera, graduate in art, graphic design and educational drawing, who was invited to participate in 1973 in the centennial of the foundation of the department of Jalapa. The laurel symbolizes victory, the stars the seven municipalities of the department (the capital Jalapa, Monjas, Mataquescuintla, San Carlos Alzatate, San Luis Jilotepeque, San Pedro Pinula and San Manuel Chaparron); white symbolizes purity; blue the sky of Jalapa; the land and the furrows the fertility for its crops; the volcano, its mountains and vegetation; the hoe, its men, farmers and peasants; the feather, the intellect and the culture of Jalapa.

SHORT-LIVED STATES IN THE CIVIL WAR OF RUSSIA, 1917-1922

By Dr. Andrey YASHLAWSKI. Special thanks to the Dr. Sergey DROBIAZKO and to Alexander DERIABIN

After the two revolutions of 1917, the Russian Empire was split into some hundred states (ephemeral states, provisional governments, autonomous states, etc...). Many flags of these states are known. Now I have found some more data on flags of the civil war era.

List (incomplete) of the States that replaced the ancient Russian Empire, with its flags.

PART ONE. More information and flag images in full version.

(PART II available in issue 15)
