The thirteen existing wine presses in El pago de Zapateros
in the middle of the XVIII Century, constituted the origin
of the Aguilarense town of this name, that in 1912 thanks
to the actions of the local M.P. José Fernández Jiménez,
converted itself into an independent municipal and adopted
the name Moriles, which was the name of some cultured lands
Moriles Altos and Moriles Bajos, existing in the proximity
of the town and famous for their wines.
In the central avenue of Andalucia stands the church San Jerónimo
a neo-Classical church of one nave erected in 1818 and rebuilt in
1875. It has on display an altarpiece from the XVIII Century brought
from another town it incorporates four canvases.
Typical dishes of Moriles are El picadillo de tomate, el salmorejo
la naranja picada de bacalao, los revueltos de haba and in Hooly
week el potaje con bacalao and las albóndigas de pescado. Homemade
sweet dishes are represented by las gachas de mosto and el arrope.
On Thursday of Semana Santa the arrest of Jesus takes place in the
square, with Apostles and members of the Roman Empire participating,
whilst on the Friday at midday the trial of Jesus is celebrated in
the same place. The Sunday closet to the 13 June, Moriles celebrates
a gathering for San Antonio and the weekend closes to the 7th October
