Particularly well known and
held in high esteem by nature lovers from all over the country are the Prades Mountains,
an exceptional ecosystem protected by Catalonia's nature interest areas Plan (PEIN). Wíthin the area of 260 square
kilometers, "Tossal de la Baltasana" stands aloft as the highest point at l.201
metres. Within this mountainous region, worth commenting are the Poblet forests with an
extension of some 3.000 hectares, comprising property belonging to the State, a good
amount of which is to be found in the Vimbodí area, and the inhabited area of Vilanova de
Prades, Vallclara and Rojals.
The special climate there means that temperatures in winter are
very low, and that snow often falls. These features convert the area into a unique
ecosystem in the country, with the oak as the main protagonist together with other local
products such as the chestnut from Vilanova de Prades, a product with the regional quality
denomination.
A multitude of marked itineraries and even some mountain guides
dedicated speciphically to the area, enable excursionists and climbers of all ages and
levels to discover the incredible beauty of these mountains and the exuberant and full
breathtaking charm of the contrasts.
