One of the undeniable
protagonists of the architectural and hístoric heritage of Conca de Barberà is the
Monastery of Santa Maria de Poblet, the
largest inhabited monastery in Europe and declared a heritage of humanity by the UNESCO.
The monastery, situated at the feet of the Prades Mountains
stands out for its sobriety and outstanding austerity. It counts on different rooms
well worth visiting such as the palace of the abbot, the capitulary hall, the cloister,
the royal palace or the gardens, whithout, of course, forgetting the church wich
accommodates the royal tombs of the Crown of Aragon, with James I The Conqueror being of
particular significance.
Its origins go back to the year 1.151, and throughout its time it
has played a decisive role in the history of Catalonia, as it is evidenced by the fact
that its líbrary holds an important historic and artistic treasure of the
Catalan-Aragonese Crown.
Together with the monasteries of "Santes Creus" and
"Vallbona de les Monges" the
monastery of Santa Maria de Poblet forms the most extraordinary Cistercian route in
Europe.
