The Cellars in which
wines and sparkling wines are elaborated have been linked to the Conca de Barberà
region. For many centuries the Conca's main economic support and exclusive means of
subsistence has been in cultivating its land.
The "estrict Conca" denomination has fomented the
land's dependence on vineyards and on the production of wine. After suffering the
effects of the phylloxera at the end of the XIX century, Conca de Barberà went through
twenty years of economic depression, the loss of the population and recession. This fact
provoked the appareance of association movements based on the principles of solidarity. It
was from that moment, that the first agricultural cooperative groups emerged, and along
with them the common buildings where the wine was produced (cooperative cellars).
The cellars in Conca de Barberà are a wealth of culture and are
well worth a visit. They are usually buildings of architecural interest. Most of them were
constructed at the beginning of the XX century according to the artistic trends of what is
known as "Agricultural Modernism" which found in the vale-born architect, Cesar
Martinell , one of the movement's outstanding representatives.
Moreover, they are rooted on the earth. In the processes of
elaboration, tradition and sentiment are mingled as one, and the visitor has the chance to
take away in a bottle some really intense sensations.
It is well worth tasting the sparkling
wines of the region, as well as the rich diversíty of wines bearing the Conca de
Barberà denomination of origin. Amongst the best wines of all Catalonia is the
"trepat" rose wine from the Conca Barberà.
